My Self-Tape Setup

My Self-Tape Setup

In my Audition Game Pro class with Wendy Davis, we self-tape an audition every week. On Saturdays, we review our work over Zoom with actors from around the country. The class gives me a clear process to prepare for an audition which means less procrastination for me! I love that it’s not only a class on how to break down a TV scene from the writer’s perspective but a crash course on self-taping!

I really had to up my self-tape game for this class. Wendy doesn’t take, “Well, it’s just for class,” as an excuse! Makeup, hair, lighting, sound, and acting all have to be PRO-level every week!

UPDATE 6/22/20- Wendy has created the How To Self Tape Like a Series Regular FOR FREE! Check it out at HowToSelfTape.com and she was my most recent guest on my podcast!

There are many ways to self-tape, but here’s what I got:

Collapsable Backdrop.

This is the backdrop (paid link) Wendy recommended. It’s collapsable and looks very professional. No more plain white walls or curtains! And it’s around $50!

Standard Ring Light

I had this ring light (paid link) in my closet for a long time before I actually started using it for class and self-tapes. If you can’t purchase this right away, start with the travel one! I got this for about $99. Pro-tip- turn it around to face the wall for softer light!

Shure Mic

I love this Shure mic from Sweetwater because it’s small enough to put in my purse or backpack for last-minute voice-over auditions, as well as using it for self-tapes! It plugs right into my iPhone and I can use it with any app. This was about $150.

Ulanzi Phone Mount

This mount (paid link) holds my phone steady and works with my ring light and other tripods.

Travel Ring Light

This travel ring light (paid link) is not enough light for complete darkness, but works as a supplemental light to natural light or for your Zoom Calls! It comes with the stand and attachment for your phone. This was around $30. Check out Wendy Davis’ travel kit recommendations here!

Ethernet Cable

For Zoom auditions and meetings, this is a must (paid link)! We have a 25 ft and a 150 ft cords so we can have stable internet from anywhere in our condo! No more bad auditions because of slow internet.

Bobbi Brown’s Masterclass

I get so many compliments on my makeup since taking this class. Great tips for on-camera and regular life!
